Vogue, 1991. untitled

I find total inspiration in this photo from Vogue. It’s old school but the girls look so tough. I am going to hunt for a long, pink cotton skirt and a gold chain belt.

“She can’t walk and chew gum at the same time”

The editorial below featuring Gisele Bundchen is getting kind of old but I forgot to post it on here when I first saw it. Honestly, if anybody can walk in those ankle breakers (I don’t know if its at all possible, do you? There looks to be about a foot worth of heel!) while chewing gum it’s Ms. Bundchen herself. Eat your heart out.

Marc Jacobs

I write about Marc Jacobs a lot and it’s getting to the point where it’s ridiculous but I can’t help it. Here are my favorite new items from his special items selection, available at all Marc Jacobs stores and more than likely on Ebay in a few weeks. Take a look:

Bebe Fall Ad Campaign

When I first moved to New York City, Bebe was the store I went to if I needed workout clothing. It now seems that over the years, Bebe has completely renovated its image and now seems more couture than anything if one is to judge by the photos from its Fall Campaign featured below. So far, the leather and denim jean featured in the last photo below, is the only item that I know for sure is going to be available. Hopefully all of the designs featured in the campaign will be, but I doubt it. I will make sure to update you as soon as I know!

Jay-Z & Death of Autotune

I don’t really care for rap. It just doesn’t strike the right nerve with me nor does it give me frequent goosebumps like genres such as R&B… But, if one rapper can give me goosebumps, it’s Jay-Z. In the song, Death of Autotune, he mentions hot 97 and all major New York City radio stations which I personally credit for introducing me to Jay-Z. I just found that sort of ironic. Take a listen/look at his new song “Death of Autotune” below. It’s a fun, festive tune. Something you just want to put on when you’re with a group of friends.

I’m craming way too much in to one blog post…

But! Emma Watson is on the front cover of UK Elle Magazine. The cover is brilliant but the inside pages, not so much. It is nothing compared to the Teen Vogue editorial and just seems kind of… Blah? I mean, couldn’t they be a little more creative and give the girl something more to work with than a bland, white wall? I am, however, extremely jealous that she got to wear Alexander McQueen booties (they have an awesome skull zipper). They’re fantastic!

Emma Watson in Teen Vogue

emma6

The Burberry ads featuring Ms. Watson were alright. However, the photos which were taken for Teen Vogue are incredibly impressive. The color contrasts are very nice and I especially like how the reds play off the purple colors. Ms. Watson’s youthful and playful appearance is striking too and in some of the photos, such as the one above, it almost seems as though she’s fairly shy and doesn’t really know what to do with herself where as in other photos such as the one below, she seems fierce and in complete control. It’s a very dramatic editorial and I absolutely feel that Burberry would have been better off had they created an ad campaign with photos like the ones below instead of the beige, rainy day vibes which they opted for instead. Despite the seasons being different, Burberry could easily have made a statement had they broken away from such a neutral, almost boring photos and color schemes. Those photos just aren’t alive, the ones below are.

Below are my favorite photos from the Teen Vogue editorial. The photos can be seen online and in the August 2009 issue of Teen Vogue which is available July 1st. Take a look:

Honeymoon Hotel

This morning, I woke up. I rolled over and opened my eyes. In front of my face lay a brown, creepy, large spider. I was so scared that I instantly woke up and (sorry, folks) killed it with the newest issue of Time Magazine. I showered, ate breakfast (which consisted of a cup of coffee, strawberries and a bowl of yogurt) and I could still not shake the image of that spider out of my head! I sat in front of my computer monitor thinking it would serve me some relief …

That’s when I found the photos above of Bruce Willis & his wife from the July 2009 issue of W Magazine. I’m now just as freaked out as I was when I woke up this morning to that spider. This editorial simply reminds me of the Saw movies (the commercials, anyways – I’ve never ever watched the Saw movies) and it just has a prison camp, futuristic clown freakshow vibe… But I have to admire their courage. It seems like a very daring, personal thing to do and hey, Mr. Willis is what… 55? and bald? More power to him! You can view the rest of the photos from the editorial here.

Double standards

Love, beth ditto.jpg

The photo above is of The Gossip singer Beth Ditto. After she posed for this cover, the feature director of British GQ, Alex Bilmes, called her a “porker”,  ”a fat lesbian” and stated that fashion editors are “stupid” for liking her. He says that she is a poor example for young women, yet what example is he setting himself? He is encouraging that young women and others speak of people like Beth Ditto in that disgusting, sleazy manner while also further increasing the dislike of obese individuals. I can not imagine what life must be like being obese here in America. The amount of ridicule, teasing and taunting one must face. It is frightening and yet I am still surprised that he hasn’t been fired. But while Sarah Palin keeps freaking out over David Letterman’s (tasteless, foolish) joke no one is making a big deal out of Mr. Bilmes remarks. At least not here in the United States. Yes, Beth Ditto is obviously overweight but so are many other people. Shouldn’t there be room for everyone? Just because she isn’t Kate Moss doesn’t mean she shouldn’t have the equal opportunity to pose for a magazine if she wants to and how dare he think he is so above it all, that he can call people “stupid” for liking her? She’s bold and quite frankly very brave. I don’t know of anyone else her size who has posed like that. She obviously knew she would receive negative attention from her decision to pose nude and while he works on stories for GQ, she is the story in other magazines and around the world. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if she soon poses in GQ and what will he say then? Sorry, I hope but I don’t believe a man like him ever would apologize. His own ignorance wouldn’t allow it.

Should these guys be referred to as fat, out-of-shape a**holes then!?

It’s a double standard. When larger men like Seth Rogen are on the front page of magazines like Vanity Fair no one calls him “porker” or anything else that’s mean. Yet when a larger woman does she immediately gets ridiculed. It makes me so mad, I want to scream. Granted the fellows below are actually clothed but they’re also out of shape and no one ever called them fat, out-of-shape a**holes, did they? And guess what? Mr. Rimes isn’t just calling Beth Ditto a “porker” and “a fat lesbian” – he is calling all women that but he is especially calling every woman her size a “porker” and every overweight lesbian “a fat lesbian”. He’s insulting countless of people, myself included and I am disgusted by him. While Sarah Palin continues to demand that David Letterman apologize to “every young woman in America”, I feel that Mr. Himes should be pressured to apologize too. He should be ashamed of himself and his own foolish words for he will never know what it feels like to be a woman and to be called fat. He will never know the self doubt that he has created in the minds of some women that relate to Beth Ditto and he will never know what it is like to appreciate diversity and promote self-worth. He’s a disgrace and I feel that everyone should be outraged.

Take a look at this brilliant editorial from the July issue of Harper’s Bazaar:

The photos feature Chris Noth (who is set to star in the Sex & The City sequel as well as Beau Willimson’s new play, Farragut North which premieres in L.A. I love it when roles get switched up especially since it doesn’t look like Dad there is doing too well with all the kids? :) Chaotic.

The American Media, its Vanity & its negative impact on body image

I’ve written a lot about body image lately. I do not know why but I just find it to be something that is essential to a lifestyle blog like my own. It’s important to tap in to and that’s why I wrote the following piece tonight.

4women asks the following question, “When you Look in the Mirror, do you Like what you see?” according to dosomething 40-50% of American women do not like what they see and 53% of thirteen year olds don’t either. They are therefore on a constant quest to loose weight. Every year, American citizens use over 40 billion dollars on diet-related products such as but not limited to: diet-pills, books and fitness DVD’s. The U.S. federal government also spends 40 billion dollars a year… But on Education! I am starting to feel like they should start educating young women about self-worth, body-image and the media because just like subjects such as Math are essential to a person’s success in the work force, so is the feeling of confidence and self-worth.

What makes a woman decide she wants to go on a diet? Health concerns? Not often. According to Newsweek most women diet due to social pressures. Women tend to compare themselves to others but who is to blame for all the comparisons? In my opinion, the media plays a huge role in making women compare themselves to other (often famous) women. I understand that the people of the media have a job to do and products to sell. However, it has become apparent that in today’s age, these products are targeted for women and they promote things that are unattainable. It’s simply all a clever trick: promote a product that illustrates what all women want such as cellulite free thighs and watch sales go up. Truth is, 98% of all women (supermodels included) have cellulite. Yet the media will cause a huge stir, when photos like the ones featured below surface.

It’s quite frankly disgusting and I hope that I am not the only one who is fed up.

“They call this fat?”

The most well known fact regarding the media is their use of computer software to alter the images in which they use. For example, a few months ago a huge stir was caused when photos of Kim Kardashian surfaced that showed her editorial featured in Complex Magazine had been altered and that she indeed does have cellulite. Like Ms. Kardashian said, “what curvy girl doesn’t?” and regardless of any of that, who can call that woman or her fellow celebrities like Jessica Simpson or Kate Winslet fat? The media scrutinizes these celebrities who are absolutely stunning and I just can’t imagine how the average 5’4”, 14o pound American woman must feel while reading headlines like that.

The pressure for American females begins at a young age. Researchers have found that popular toys like the Barbie doll would be too weak to support the weight of her upper body, and her body would be too narrow to contain more than half a liver and a few centimeters of bowel were she a real person. A real woman built that way would suffer from chronic diarrhea and eventually die from malnutrition. Yet American children grow up idolizing that same Barbie while wishing they could be like her. Researchers also report that women’s magazines have ten and one-half times more ads and articles promoting weight loss than men’s magazines do, and over three-quarters of the covers of women’s magazines include at least one message about how to change a woman’s bodily appearance— usually by diet, exercise or cosmetic surgery not just make-up. With all of this bombardment, it is no wonder that women today feel constant pressure to pursue the ideal happiness of thinness. But when does it end?

Dove is actively campaigning for what they call “real” beauty in an effort to end negative body image. The online campaign features workshops, tools, tips, facts and words of encouragement. Dove is in my opinion the absolute leader in America in promoting healthy body image. You can visit the site here.

Picture 9

I hope you ladies take the time to carefully think about the way you feel about yourself. The issue of body image is complex and complicated. It is impossible to wake up every morning feeling like you look incredible but  you can improve your feelings regarding your own self everyday with small steps. Campaigns such as the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty lends suggestions in how to take such steps. It’s about time that women around the world learn to love themselves despite the media’s constant bombardment that tells them to do otherwise. Every person regardless of their shape, size, color or traits is a beautiful individual!

House of Harlow

house-of-harlow-nicole-01.jpg

I officially respect Nicole Richie (shown above, wearing her own collection from the House of Harlow) & I know she was dying for my approval… Not. Anyways, I do believe that she is considered a fashion icon and she could so easily have created a clothing line like all of the other celebrities but instead, she created a jewelry collection. I like it mostly because it’s affordable – Prices range from $30.00 to $150.00. The collection includes the use of leather, silk, chains, feathers and gold-plated metals among other things. Take a look at a few of my favorite pieces below & shop the rest of the collection here:

Update: Nicole Richie will be designing lifestyle line (1:34 PM)

I just learned new details regarding Nicole Richie’s House of Harlow collection. According to WWD, Nicole Richie is actually in the process of designing a lifestyle brand that will include apparel, shoes, etc. Disappointing but who can blame her? I apologize for the incorrect information. The collection will hit stores in 2010.

Another jewelry collection that is worth taking a look at, is that of Meadowlark. The collection also features necklaces, bracelets among other items. Here are my favorite pieces:

One of my own personal favorites, from my own (small) jewelry collection is featured below. I have no idea who designed it but it’s a funny piece & every time I look down at it, I think of Pirates of the Caribbean.

“It’s not true that I had nothing on. I had the radio on.”

That  was a quote from Marilyn Monroe and that’s what I thought of when I saw the V Magazine Swimsuit issue. It’s raw, provocative and just a little bit vulgar. I feel that V Magazine makes the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue look boring mostly because of its use use of powerful colors & neons layouts. V Magazine also did an excellent job incorporating black & white shots, my favorite being of Charles Devoe (he’s eye-candy indeed). The photos were taken by Mario Testino. Take a look:

Iron Curtain

Also, I just viewed Beyonce’s new video for her new song Ego (I really wish she’d just put the leotard to rest, NY Magazine agrees that it’s not charming stating the following, “We felt more comfortable with Britney (in her prime) dancing around in stretch pants and crop tops. The dancing in leotards must stop. Do it for the children, ladies”) and that’s when I also viewed the Diva video for the first time. I fell in love with her fringe sunglasses but I couldn’t find these sunglasses anywhere but I did find a pair with a similar concept from Germany designed by Bless
