“I don’t know who invented high heels but women owe him a lot”

I don’t know why Marilyn Monroe stated the quote above because who knows if the person who invented the shoe was indeed a male? It could easily have been a woman. Just take a look at the footwear from Ms. Donna Karan below – she is a  brilliant designer. Take a look:

Leather + Blue Jeans

I found absolute inspiration from Alexander Wang and from the Fall 2009 pieces from William Rast with this look that I plan on wearing in the Fall along with a red lip, studded boots and statement bracelets. It’s not the real deal but it’ll have to do. Take a look:

It is actually a leather jacket worn under a denim vest and I therefore can wear both pieces seperately which is great!

The Olsen’s Are Inducted

olsens

I’ve expressed before that I am not a fan of Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen. I don’t care for their acting nor do I care for their weird hobo/I’m-super-rich-but-I-like-to-look- homeless fashion statements. However, I really do appreciate their collections the Row and Elizabeth & James. In fact, those are the only celebrity clothing lines that I actually  continuously care for. Mary-Kate and Ashley have managed to stay out of their own ad campaigns for the collections unlike fellow celebrity designers such as Jessica Simpson and Avril Lavigne which I find refreshing too. It seems that The CFDA (The Council of Fashion Designers) does recognize this as well because the sisters are among 31 designers  (along with designers such as Alexander Wang and Jason Wu) to be inducted in to and honored by The Council of Fashion Designers. They will receive their accolade in New York in October. The Row is inspired by London’s Savile Row and is meant to reflect the actresses personal style. The exact style that I do not care for but somehow really love when they design. Whereas Elizabeth & James is more contemporary and is inspired mainly by vintage pieces also from their personal wardrobes. Both lines should be expanding to include mens collections by the Fall of 2009. I don’t understand why the Row doesn’t have an official website and the girls seem to be behind in their collections since they’re not offering a Fall/Winter 2009 collection from Elizabeth and James yet or so the official website makes it seem. Designers such as Alexander Wang are already featuring such collections on their websites and it concerns me that the girls aren’t up to date with their lookbooks especially since many are now speaking of their collections due to their being inducted in to the CFDA. Anyways, featured below are my favorite items from the Elizabeth & James Spring 2009 Collection. The collection includes jewelry and footwear too and is very feminine and delicate. Take a look:

I enjoyed my lunch break today by dining at Bob’s Place Restaurant which is located in Long Island right down the block from where I work. I first went to Bob’s Place approximately three weeks ago and I fell in love. The food, the service and the atmosphere are incredible. Upon entering the dining area one instantly knows that a good meal is about to follow. Their prices are surprisingly low and everything (I mean, everything) is made fresh.  A three course meal is $15.00 which to me, is an incredible deal. I love going there not only because of the food but also because it is such a relaxing place to eat.  No one rushes you and you feel like taking your time eating. The atmosphere is excellent and the wait staff is incredible. They’re kind and always smiling. If I were a food critic, I would give Bob’s Place 5 out of 5 stars but just take a look at the review of Bob’s Place from Horse Society Magazine here and visit Bob’s Place Restaurant’s Official Website here.

Below are some photos of the inside of Bob’s Place. I will take my own next time I go there.

Sketched Out

Picture 10

One of the biggest compliments a blogger can receive is when California-based artist, Danny Roberts (pictured above) takes the time to sketch and draw a picture of you (take a look at some of the blogger portraits here). Well, if you can’t be drawn by him, you can now wear something in which he has drawn. At the young age of 23, Mr. Roberts has collaborated with Gwen Stefani for the Harajucku Lovers collection. I have never cared for any Harajuku Lovers designs and then I saw the two bags featured below. I really like these bags! The plaid prints are great and I really like how the illustrations really look like they’re drawn directly on the bags. The designs are just simple and straight to the point. Mr. Roberts has collaborated with other designs for Harajucku Lovers and he said that he believes they will be out by the end of the month so stay tuned. Picture 6Picture 5

10 Questions for Ryan Calhoun

Ryan-Calhoun_exHENf5rE6Mx_full.jpg

Every monday night at 9 PM, my DVR records ABC Family’s new show Make it or Break it. My good friend, Candace Cameron Bure stars in this show and in the beginning that is the only reason I even watched it. Despite the show only being two episodes in, I have fallen love with it! The show is also the reason I learned about Ryan Calhoun who is 26 year old recording artist from Los Angeles, CA. His song “Who We Are” played during the show and I became intrigued with it so I immediately googled him and listened to his songs on iTunes. Three e-mails later, my interview with Ryan was finalized. What a character he is! Smart, funny and blunt is how I would describe him. He illustrates these characteristics on his Myspace where he wastes no time playing around stating things such as “I don’t know if I have that many accomplishments and most critics would/will probably hate my music” but that’s exactly the attitude that made me want to talk to him to begin with because instead of listing all of his accomplishments, I just got to listen to his music instead. That was really refreshing and quite clever because he does speak through his music and you kind of feel like you’re getting to know him better after each song that you listen to.

The music is all original and written by Ryan himself. Songs like “What I want” is the type of song you would want to play on a rainy night, it is really intimate.  Then there are songs like “Draining” that are personal and a little more upbeat. One can not help but wonder what type of person or situation inspires Ryan to write these type of lyrics but with over 1,811,816 plays on Myspace and a number one spot on the iTunes charts I suspect we’re going to hear a lot more of Ryan. You can hear his music on shows such as MTV’s The Real World and now on Make it or Break it. Ryan will also be touring this summer with Alisa Turner who herself is a talented artist too.

RyanCalhoun-02-big.jpg

With intrigue comes curiosity so I decided to ask Ryan some questions. Below they are answered gracefully. Take a look:

1. How long have you been playing music? Who encouraged you start singing and do you write you own music?

RC: I’ve been playing music since I was about 11 or so. I grew up in a very musical family, but I would say my sister encouraged/influenced me the most with music. And Yes, I write all my own music.

2. Who influences your music? Are there any mainstream or even indie artists who influence you? What about family, friends, (ex) girlfriends, etc.

RC: I think i’m influenced by so many different things. I try and draw from all my life experiences. Heartache, love, hurt, fears, failures, dreams etc.

3. Your music has been featured on MTV and your song “Who We Are” was recently featured on the new ABC family show Make it or Break it. Please describe what it feels like to hear your own music being played on TV.

RC: Ya know, it’s a little surreal, but of course it’s a great feeling. It’s nice to know that people are connecting to something that is so personal to me.

4. When, where and how were you discovered? Or did you do the discovering by sending out demo’s or auditioning?

RC: haha, well I don’t know if I’m “discovered” quite yet, but hopefully getting there. Yeah, a lot of this business is just keeping your nose to the grind and being persistent. I’ve sent out a lot of cd’s, emails, mp3s to a lot of different people. It’s nice to see some of the hard work pay off.

5. How would you describe your music and what do you hope to accomplish with it?

RC: I’ve finally come up with a description of my music. “Unapologetic Pop Rock” haha… I want to continue to just make honest music and have a career at doing it. It would be nice to play Madison Square Garden one day.

6. You are going on tour this August with Alisa Turner. Is this your first tour and what do you expect to experience while you are on the road?

RC: Not my first tour, but my first tour with Alisa. Being on the road is an interesting experience. It’s always full of surprises. I guess you always have to expect the unexpected.

7. Other than the tour, do you have any upcoming projects?

RC: Just going to be working on more touring, more TV and Film placements. Stuff like that.

8. Which artist (dead or alive) would you like to work with and why?

RC: There are a couple. I would love to work with Bono and The Edge. Dave Grohl and probably MJ…

9. What is your advice for people who want to pursue a career in music?

RC: Stay true to yourself and your convictions. just be persistent and do it because you love it.

10. What is your favorite song that you perform? And why?

RC: I really enjoy performing “who we are” I don’t play too many songs on the piano (most of them are on guitar). It’s good to change it up…

Take a listen…

“She can’t walk and chew gum at the same time”

The editorial below featuring Gisele Bundchen is getting kind of old but I forgot to post it on here when I first saw it. Honestly, if anybody can walk in those ankle breakers (I don’t know if its at all possible, do you? There looks to be about a foot worth of heel!) while chewing gum it’s Ms. Bundchen herself. Eat your heart out.

Marc Jacobs

I write about Marc Jacobs a lot and it’s getting to the point where it’s ridiculous but I can’t help it. Here are my favorite new items from his special items selection, available at all Marc Jacobs stores and more than likely on Ebay in a few weeks. Take a look:

Bebe Fall Ad Campaign

When I first moved to New York City, Bebe was the store I went to if I needed workout clothing. It now seems that over the years, Bebe has completely renovated its image and now seems more couture than anything if one is to judge by the photos from its Fall Campaign featured below. So far, the leather and denim jean featured in the last photo below, is the only item that I know for sure is going to be available. Hopefully all of the designs featured in the campaign will be, but I doubt it. I will make sure to update you as soon as I know!

Jay-Z & Death of Autotune

I don’t really care for rap. It just doesn’t strike the right nerve with me nor does it give me frequent goosebumps like genres such as R&B… But, if one rapper can give me goosebumps, it’s Jay-Z. In the song, Death of Autotune, he mentions hot 97 and all major New York City radio stations which I personally credit for introducing me to Jay-Z. I just found that sort of ironic. Take a listen/look at his new song “Death of Autotune” below. It’s a fun, festive tune. Something you just want to put on when you’re with a group of friends.

I’m craming way too much in to one blog post…

But! Emma Watson is on the front cover of UK Elle Magazine. The cover is brilliant but the inside pages, not so much. It is nothing compared to the Teen Vogue editorial and just seems kind of… Blah? I mean, couldn’t they be a little more creative and give the girl something more to work with than a bland, white wall? I am, however, extremely jealous that she got to wear Alexander McQueen booties (they have an awesome skull zipper). They’re fantastic!

Dana-Maxx Designs

Designer of The Week: Dana-Maxx Pomerantz

HEAD_SHOT_2.jpg

I took one look Dana-Maxx‘s Fall designs and immediately decided that I had to feature them on YOU ARE WHO YOU WEAR. The designs are just striking, fierce and flirty and if you are anything like me you are already looking for inspiration for your Fall 2009 wardrobe. I recommend that you take a look at Ms. Maxx’s designs for just that.

I was immediately impressed with Ms. Maxx’s use of bold colors and feminine features (such as the ruffled bottom skirts) because that makes the designs feel and look edgy while also maintaining a feminine touch to them. I couldn’t help but find Dana-Maxx’s designs to be incredibly chic with a little mix of rock and roll and that is something that is completely in style this season (hello, Taylor Momsen!). However, it is even more impressive that Dana-Maxx designs are all created in the United States by fabrics that are imported from Italy and/or France. Dana-Maxx feels that designing her collections here in the U.S. allows for more control and better timing of products and I was so happy to hear that.

Dana-Maxx is no stranger to the world of Fashion Design. She studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology, became an intern for Betsey Johnson and later worked for Marc Jacobs until she decided to create her own collection in 2007.  Her designs clearly show that she is no ordinary rookie and with celebrities such as Jaslene Gonzalez, Alexandra Alexis and  Janell Snowden all wearing her designs I expect you will see more of this newcomer.

Take a look at my favorite looks from Dana-Maxx’s Fall 2009 Collection and my interview of Dana-Maxx herself below:

Picture 8Picture 34Picture 31Picture 33

The collection is available from sizes 2-10 and petite and large. Find a store that carries The Dana-Maxx Collection near you here and take a look at my interview of Dana-Maxx herself below.

10 Questions for Dana-Maxx Pomerantz

1. You launched your own collection for the first time in 2007. Was that nerve-wracking or did you feel comfortable after having worked under the wing of great designers such as Betsey Johnson & Marc Jacobs?

DM: I honestly didn’t even think about how scary having my own business would be!  I felt the timing was right, made a careful decision, and dove right in.  I was very fortunate to have been able to hone my skills at 2 incredible fashion houses.  At Betsey Johnson, I had the opportunity to work with Betsey herself, one-on-one, and it was amazing.   I learned so much from both companies about properly running a business, treating others with respect, hard work, dedication, creativity, and humility.

2. How would you describe your collection and what are the inspirations behind them?

DM: Each season, my collections are a personal reflection of where I am in my life.  Everything and anything inspires me and the creative process is like healthy dose of fun therapy!  For example, Fall/Winter 2009 was inspired by love gained and love lost and the struggles we face in this economy.  The collection is moody and a bit edgy.  It’s very different than the Spring/Summer 2009 collection (which is in stores now).  At that time, I just met my boyfriend and I felt very child-like and playful.  The collection was created around chic Parisian candy shoppes and it’s very colorful and whimsical. The line is flirty, chic, and sophisticated with detailing that makes each piece special.  The entire line is proudly produced in the USA at a reasonable price.  Women want superb quality and styling- without the $1,000 price tag- which is why they like Dana-Maxx.

3. When did your interest for Fashion spark? In high school or even earlier?

DM: Ever since I was a little girl I always wanted to be a fashion designer.  I use to have a pretend store setup in my bedroom.  My customers were my stuffed animals and I would sit and sketch clothing for them and take orders.  Who knew that is exactly what I would be doing 20 years later!  Fashion was always in my blood- I would sleep it, eat it, and dream it.  I could not wait to make that dream a reality one day.

4. Your collection has been viewed on one runway in May of 2009. Can you please describe what creating a collection for a Runway feels like? Are you nervous about so many individuals judging your designs or are you comfortable with that?

DM:Creating a collection for the runway is pretty similar to creating a collection in general.  I try not to think about who will be there and what people may think.  It’s important to stay true to yourself and believe in your product because there are always going to be people who try and stop you from succeeding.  We recently did our very first runway show at Greenhouse in May and it was a success!  I worked super hard and showed 2 collections- Summer and Fall/Winter 2009.  People were amazed!!  Being a newer designer, I always try and work ahead of schedule.

5. Your collections are created here in The United States. That is becoming very rare since most clothing is now created in countries such as China. Why did you decide to keep your creations within The United States?

DM: I was born and raised in the USA and I am very proud of the country I’m from.  The workmanship is amazing here and I love having hands on control with everything.  I attend every fitting and so I know exactly what’s going on.  Also, since everything is made in the heart of the fashion district, the turn around time is so fast- in this economy buyers and customers are placing last minute orders, so it’s great to know they can place an order and receive their goods within 2-3 weeks!

6. Where did you grow up? Who influenced you? And who suggested that you pursue a career in Fashion?

DM: I was born in NYC and then my family moved to NJ.  I always knew I wanted to go into fashion and I am lucky to have a very supportive family.  I took fashion courses in high school and graduated from The Fashion Institute of Technology.  My family is very influential; I use to watch my grandmother and how she dressed.  She was always so beautifully put together and she looked like a movie star!  I credit my mom for her sense of strength and faith in me and my dad for his sense of determination and his ability to overcome failure in his life.  What drives me to succeed is the motivation to want to be able to give back to my parents one day for all they have ever given to me.

7. You state in your online biography that you got coffee and made photocopies during your time at Betsey Johnson when you also got the opportunity to redesign a skirt with Ms. Johnson herself. Do you feel “starting from the bottom” taught you character and gave you critical skills that you now use in your work today? Did Ms. Johnson or Marc Jacobs influence you as a designer and/or on a personal level in any way?

DM: Yes!!  Starting from the bottom and working to get to the top is so important in life.  It teaches you humility, character, and tests your strength.  I didn’t know anyone in the industry when I first started, but I always knew that if I wanted to be successful one day, I would have to work very hard and learn from the best.  My motto in life is you have to make things happen, not let them happen!  I’m always on the look out for opportunities. I never met Marc Jacobs himself, but Betsey was such an influence.  She always treated her interns with the same amount of respect as her Creative Director, she always had the ability to laugh at herself, and she made the work environment so fun.  That amount of kindness, humility, and passion was so inspirational- I knew I wanted to incorporate those exact traits into my own company one day.

8. What is your advice for individuals whom want to intern for a Fashion Designer or in the world of Fashion?

DM: Start at the bottom, dress for the job you want- not the job you have, and stay positive!!

9. What is your advice for individuals whom want to design their own collections?

DM: Have patience, persistence, and passion.  Believe in yourself and your product and expect rejection.  The only person who is going to stop you is yourself, so stay positive!!

10. When is your next Runway show? Where will it be held and does one need to purchase tickets?

DM: We have a bunch of events coming up!  We are planning a private cocktail/runway show event in the Hamptons for customers in July, a customer event at the store Glitter Girl in LA and The Housewives of California in August, and a fun customer event in NYC in September.  You can follow all updates and learn more about the events @ www.dana-maxx.com, on Twitter and Facebook.

The First Lady of The Dance Floor

Lady Gaga is absolutely obnoxious. That’s why I like her and to think that she used to be a songwriter ie. someone who worked behind the scenes. Today, Lady G is one of the biggest pop stars in the world, she gets to wear leotards in public and is an artist that no one would recognize if she were to walk down the street in regular clothing and no make-up. She’s smart and by far one of my favorite artists.

Below are photos of The First Lady of The Dance Floor from a feature in Maxim Magazine. Take a look:

Liquid Metals

There’s something really daring about the looks below. British newcomer Roksanda Ilincic has created an almost gothic feel to the design with the dark lips and jetblack hair

Whereas Michael Kors offers a more casual feel to the metallic color with simple make-up and beautiful pieces of jewelery

The Marc Jacobs dress below was worn by Kate Moss and this is one of the first designs from Marc Jacobs that I am not incredibly fond of. There’s something greek goddess meets halloween about it and the design completely reminds me of a dress created by Patricia Field last year. However, the color of Marc Jacobs’s dress is excellent – It would flatter any skin color too!

Farrah Fawcett

I sat and watched Farrah Fawcett’s documentary Farrah’s Story just last week. While I was watching the documentary, I said to myself, “she will survive this.” Just a few days later, I along with the rest of the world learned of her death. In the documentary, she looked so frail but along with longtime partner, Ryan O’neal she seemed incredibly optimistic and strong. I immediately admired their courage as a couple because the documentary allowed the most intimate, emotional moments of their battle with cancer to be revealed. The actress was known for her hair and she let the entire world see her bald and without it, she let the camera roll while she became more sick and she also allowed a very wonderful glimpse in to her life with Mr. O’neal. It seemed as though she wanted viewers to know what cancer does to person yet never once did she make it seem as though she felt sorry for herself. She embraced the situation gracefully and that is wonderful. I am sure she will be an inspiration to many of the millions of people who battle cancer. I wish her family the absolute best.

Michael Jackson

michael

I had to mention Mr. Jackson despite feeling reluctant to do so. No one can deny this man’s impact on culture, music and fashion among other things. He was a great performer and artist – someone with a true gift. I feel that Mr. Jackson was a talented artist and that is the only way I choose to write about him here, despite of how I feel about him as a public figure. I will not mention anything regarding the trials in which he faced or his personal life. However, I do find it quite odd that just three days ago he was dubbed by the media as “Wacko Jacko” and people were constantly making fun of him and his family yet now that he has passed away, he is simply known as “The King of Pop” and the public outcry continues to increase to tremendous levels. Time Magazine, for example, is publishing a special edition in honor of Mr. Jackson in between its weekly issue. The last time Time Magazine published a special edition of that kind was in the days following 9/11. Don’t get me wrong, I do wish his family, his children and friends well and I feel that it’s sad for the world of music but the media hypocrisy is ridiculous. The media has ridiculed this man for decades and yet they’re currently crying their crocodile tears over the fact that his heart has stopped beating.

On a different note…

A young woman asked me today what make-up products I use, so I figured I’d let you all know about a few of the things you can find in my make-up drawer.

I have very, very curly hair. There’s only one conditioner that has ever worked and that conditioner is made by Pantene ($4.99). I have tried numerous salon brand conditioners and nothing comes close to what this conditioner offers. It makes my curls manageable and frizz-free.

pantene

For facial mosturizing I use Cetaphil ($11.49) right before bed time. It doesn’t make skin greasy but instead it gives it a dewly, glowy look.

cetaphil

For lipwear I use Revlon’s Nude Attitude ($7.99). It glides on effortlessly but has to be reapplied often.

revlon

and for Bronzer I use Physicians Formula Baked Pyramid Square in Baked Tan ($11.95). It’s matte (no glitter!) and can be applied dry or wet. It doesn’t make your skin oily and remains on all day.

I swear by Chanel cosmetics too. Their eyeshadows are fantastic and last forever.

Emma Watson in Teen Vogue

emma6

The Burberry ads featuring Ms. Watson were alright. However, the photos which were taken for Teen Vogue are incredibly impressive. The color contrasts are very nice and I especially like how the reds play off the purple colors. Ms. Watson’s youthful and playful appearance is striking too and in some of the photos, such as the one above, it almost seems as though she’s fairly shy and doesn’t really know what to do with herself where as in other photos such as the one below, she seems fierce and in complete control. It’s a very dramatic editorial and I absolutely feel that Burberry would have been better off had they created an ad campaign with photos like the ones below instead of the beige, rainy day vibes which they opted for instead. Despite the seasons being different, Burberry could easily have made a statement had they broken away from such a neutral, almost boring photos and color schemes. Those photos just aren’t alive, the ones below are.

Below are my favorite photos from the Teen Vogue editorial. The photos can be seen online and in the August 2009 issue of Teen Vogue which is available July 1st. Take a look:

They’re teaming up with Jimmy Choo for holiday retailing and according to The Guardian , the collection will include footwear, accessories and clothing.  I don’t even want to know how fast that collection is going to sell out but it’s fantastic news, anyways!

Speaking of shoes…

I found some old things in the attic today. My vintage/very beat up Fendi bag and tan leather wedges! They’re so comfortable!

I also found an old H&M vest which was bought when I lived in Europe about 7 years ago. It’s a little boxy but I am sure I’ll use it in my wardrobe this Fall.

May I also suggest that…

You take a listen to The Fray’s cover of Kanye West’s song “Heartless.” This song has always been extremely personal to me and The Fray just increased my love for the song. Just like Mandy Moore’s cover of Rihanna’s “Umbrella”, The Fray’s version allows for one to realize exactly what is being said and sung of within the lyrics. Beautiful. Take a look/listen:

Plastic Dreams

Agyness Deyn - Ashanti.jpg

Supermodel Agyness Deyn in the Ashanti boot which retails for $120.00

Until today, I didn’t think that it was at all possible to create shoes like high heels simply out of soft plastic. However, I stumbled upon Melissa shoes and they seem to be designed from just that! The shoes are created by transforming plastic spheres in to … Well, shoes. The plastic is manufactured in Brazil and according to stylefrizz, Melissa sells 2.3 million pairs of shoes a year. Vivienne Westwood is the lastest designer whom has signed models for Melissa and little did I know that I actually featured one of those models on youarewhoyouwear a few days ago. Below are my favorite Melissa designs. They are very interesting and diverse and I can’t believe I didn’t know of the designs until today. Take a look:

Melissa also featured a design on it’s Australian site which immediate caught my eye simply because it reminded me so much of a shoe in which Marc Jacobs created too.

There’s absolutely nothing better than a loyal pair of shoes

I got these booties in October of 2008. They were incredibly budget friendly and since then, they’ve been through blizzards with me, puddles of mud, dirt, cornfields – you name it. They still look brand new, they feel brand new and they’re a delight to walk in. I hope they remain that way :) I wore them out to the movies along with my Marc Jacobs bag but I forgot to include it in the picture. I went out with my sister to see The Hangover which was by far the most entertaining movie I have seen in years – incredibly hilarious not to mention that Bradley Cooper is so gorgeous! Who knew?

& speaking of Marc Jacobs…

One has to adore his Fall/Winter 2009 shoe collection. It’s a fun collection (am I the only one who feels that the base of the shoes featured below look somewhat similar to a clog?  Maybe Mr. Jacobs found inspiration from the clog and built the shoes from there?) and it just screams Marc Jacobs. Here a my favorite picks:

On a different note…

Take a look at this brilliant editorial from the July issue of Harper’s Bazaar:

The photos feature Chris Noth (who is set to star in the Sex & The City sequel as well as Beau Willimson’s new play, Farragut North which premieres in L.A. June 16th – Get tickets here) & Milla Jovovich who’s obviously the money maker in the family. I love it when roles get switched up especially since it doesn’t look like Dad there is doing too well with all the kids? :) Chaotic.

I also suggest that…

You all take a look at Prabal Gurung‘s Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear (and debut) collection, my favorite looks from the collection are featured below:
