10 Questions for Audrey Cantwell

I learned of Canadian fashion designer Audrey Cantwell completely by mistake. I was simply surfing the very popular website, Etsy.com when I stumbled upon her Etsy store “blackmarketbaby” and as many designers before her, I absolutely had to contact Ms. Cantwell regarding her designs. Below I have featured my favorite Audrey Cantwell designs as well as ten questions regarding them and her process of designing fashion. Take a look:

1. Your collections seem to have a dark themes. For example, your Howl collection includes a great amount of leather and studs and your most recent collection Salem features a lot of black colors and drapes. Why is that and how did you come up with the names for your collections?

I`ve always had a bit of a dark sensibility and it comes out in the garments I make, I can’t really explain why, it just appeals to me. The titles come from a mood or inspiration I have for the collection, when making my HOWL collection I was reading a lot of Ginsberg, X was the title I gave to a collection inspired by pirates and the sea, Salem was inspired by witches and the northern wilderness.

2. Can you tell me about your design process? How do you design and what components are key to your successfully doing so. Do you find inspiration in music, nature or anything particular?

I have ideas for specific garments and I have a general idea of the mood or feel. I never draw anything and just drape most first samples. I’m inspired by fabrics and textures very much. I also am very inspired by music, and sometimes by nature, fantasy, mysticism, people I know, people I don’t know…

3. You are from Canada. Do you find that there is any difference in Canadian designs versus American and European designs?

I don’t really know if there is and wouldn’t know how to describe it, but there is so much creative energy in Canada that’s just starting to be discovered and acknowledged by people all over the world.

4. Your website states that, “I cut and I sew and I save the more fortunate results.” is it really that simple for you to design?

Down to the core, I think it is. I like to experiment when I design. I explore every idea I have. Some turn out the way I envisioned, some don’t. I go forward with the ones that I believe in most.

5. Who do you design your collection for? Who is the ideal woman that would wear your clothes?

There is no ideal woman, really. I have no one in mind when I design. I know this aesthetic doesn’t appeal to everyone, but I think the ones who do like it, really love it and breathe it.

6. What do you hope to accomplish with your designs?

As long as I can continue to do what I love everyday and people continue to want to wear my designs, I couldn’t ask for more.

7. What is your favorite part of the design process?

Getting inspired by colours, fabrics, materials, textures.

8. I would describe you as a designer. However, how would you describe yourself?

I design, cut, drape, sew,.. I think I am a designer.

9. Are you currently working on another collection. If so, when will it be available?

I’m wrapping up my spring collection entitled Mysterium, it should be online and for sale in 2 to 3 weeks. It’s quite different than anything I’ve done before it.

10. What is your advice to individuals who want to become designers? What worked for you?

I’m not sure if I have much advice as I’ve only been doing this a few months and still figuring everything out for myself, but I would say, very simply; explore.

Special thanks to Audrey Cantwell.

When I traveled to SoHo to interview Iris Loeffler last month, Ms. Loeffler took me to one of her favorite shoe stores, United Nude. I was instantly impressed with their designs – especially the Stealth design (featured below). I have featured my favorite picks below and if you are interested in purchasing any of the United Nude designs they are available to purchase online. Fall Forward

I am writing this from Rhode Island where temperatures are well above 90 degrees – I’m going to the beach tomorrow, except if it is supposed to rain as I have been told. I’m slowly loosing my mind and I can’t wait for the fall, as many of  you already know since I’ve been writing about fall fashions since July. Thankfully there’s only 6 weeks left of this weather and then I can go from complaining about the heat to complaining about the cold.Picture 72Picture 87

The Louie Vuitton Don Kicks it.

The much talked about sneakers designed by Kanye West for Louis Vuitton became available today – but good luck getting your paws on them, they’re already sold out! I wonder who bought these 900 something dollar sneakers, during this type of economy?

West makes great music but he is your typical overconfident male which makes him annoying. Equally annoying is it the fact that he is suddenly part of the fashion world. However, I was surprised by is the fact that his sneakers for LV are actually quite nice (minus the price tag). Take a look:

Louis Vuitton Menswear Spring 2010

I can’t help but to think the footwear below is really cool. I don’t care if they’re designed for men, I wouldn’t mind wearing them!

What do you think?

Let ‘em have burkas!

According to NY Magazine, last week, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said full-body veils, like burkas some Muslim women wear over their clothes, are “not welcome” in France. That sounds like something our former President would say and yet I can not help but be incredibly angry at the fact that these men get to rule countries. If somebody like Iran President Ahmadinejad said tthat the cross was not welcome in their country, imagine what type of war would be started then. Many do not realize that the muslim faith is a beautiful faith that includes Jesus as a Prophet. Muslim’s are dedicated believers that pray five times a day and fast during Ramadan. The Muslim faith is accepting – in fact, it is so accepting that you just have to profess your faith of Mohammed in order to become a Muslim. I grew up with Muslims and I thank God for that every day. Every since 9/11 there has been such ridicule towards that faith and I just don’t understand why. Many don’t even know that the majority of the worlds muslims do not exist in the Middle East, but in Indonesia instead. It’s disgraceful.  But all women who wear burkas got the last laugh four days later, because the George V hotel in Paris hosted a fashion show that included nothing but designer fashions that muslim women could wear from designers such as Nina Ricci and Blumarine. Take a look:

John Galliano, Carolina Herrera, Nina Ricci, and More Design Fancy AbayasThe Saks Fifth Avenue Riyadh and Jeddah fashion show at the George V hotel in Paris.

I’m glad to see that Muslim women are being recognized by the fashion world. Hopefully, the President of France will apologize for his tasteless remarks.

Glamour Girl

Taylor Swift looks incredible in the pages of Glamour Magazine! Just like Elle UK gave Emma Watson a simple white wall to work with so did Glamour Magazine with Ms. Swift. But unlike Emma, she makes that white wall pop!

The First Lady of The Dance Floor

Lady Gaga is absolutely obnoxious. That’s why I like her and to think that she used to be a songwriter ie. someone who worked behind the scenes. Today, Lady G is one of the biggest pop stars in the world, she gets to wear leotards in public and is an artist that no one would recognize if she were to walk down the street in regular clothing and no make-up. She’s smart and by far one of my favorite artists.

Below are photos of The First Lady of The Dance Floor from a feature in Maxim Magazine. Take a look:

I highly doubt anyone but Lady Gaga would wear a leotard and fishnets in public. But who knows? Some of you might just do that! I say go for it.

The gloves featured above/below are designed by Alexander McQueen and cost $470.00 – Who can afford that?!

So I went on a quest and found these fingerless gloves that are very similar to McQueen’s version, except they cost me $6.99! Take a look:

On a different but similar note..

I am always reminded of Betsey Johnson when I see Lady Gaga. Just take a look at my favorite looks from the Betsey Johnson’s Spring 2009 RTW Runway Show:

Liquid Metals

There’s something really daring about the looks below. British newcomer Roksanda Ilincic has created an almost gothic feel to the design with the dark lips and jetblack hair

Whereas Michael Kors offers a more casual feel to the metallic color with simple make-up and beautiful pieces of jewelery

The Marc Jacobs dress below was worn by Kate Moss and this is one of the first designs from Marc Jacobs that I am not incredibly fond of. There’s something greek goddess meets halloween about it and the design completely reminds me of a dress created by Patricia Field last year. However, the color of Marc Jacobs’s dress is excellent – It would flatter any skin color too!

Farrah Fawcett

I sat and watched Farrah Fawcett’s documentary Farrah’s Story just last week. While I was watching the documentary, I said to myself, “she will survive this.” Just a few days later, I along with the rest of the world learned of her death. In the documentary, she looked so frail but along with longtime partner, Ryan O’neal she seemed incredibly optimistic and strong. I immediately admired their courage as a couple because the documentary allowed the most intimate, emotional moments of their battle with cancer to be revealed. The actress was known for her hair and she let the entire world see her bald and without it, she let the camera roll while she became more sick and she also allowed a very wonderful glimpse in to her life with Mr. O’neal. It seemed as though she wanted viewers to know what cancer does to person yet never once did she make it seem as though she felt sorry for herself. She embraced the situation gracefully and that is wonderful. I am sure she will be an inspiration to many of the millions of people who battle cancer. I wish her family the absolute best.

Michael Jackson

michael

I had to mention Mr. Jackson despite feeling reluctant to do so. No one can deny this man’s impact on culture, music and fashion among other things. He was a great performer and artist – someone with a true gift. I feel that Mr. Jackson was a talented artist and that is the only way I choose to write about him here, despite of how I feel about him as a public figure. I will not mention anything regarding the trials in which he faced or his personal life. However, I do find it quite odd that just three days ago he was dubbed by the media as “Wacko Jacko” and people were constantly making fun of him and his family yet now that he has passed away, he is simply known as “The King of Pop” and the public outcry continues to increase to tremendous levels. Time Magazine, for example, is publishing a special edition in honor of Mr. Jackson in between its weekly issue. The last time Time Magazine published a special edition of that kind was in the days following 9/11. Don’t get me wrong, I do wish his family, his children and friends well and I feel that it’s sad for the world of music but the media hypocrisy is ridiculous. The media has ridiculed this man for decades and yet they’re currently crying their crocodile tears over the fact that his heart has stopped beating.

On a different note…

A young woman asked me today what make-up products I use, so I figured I’d let you all know about a few of the things you can find in my make-up drawer.

I have very, very curly hair. There’s only one conditioner that has ever worked and that conditioner is made by Pantene ($4.99). I have tried numerous salon brand conditioners and nothing comes close to what this conditioner offers. It makes my curls manageable and frizz-free.

pantene

For facial mosturizing I use Cetaphil ($11.49) right before bed time. It doesn’t make skin greasy but instead it gives it a dewly, glowy look.

cetaphil

For lipwear I use Revlon’s Nude Attitude ($7.99). It glides on effortlessly but has to be reapplied often.

revlon

and for Bronzer I use Physicians Formula Baked Pyramid Square in Baked Tan ($11.95). It’s matte (no glitter!) and can be applied dry or wet. It doesn’t make your skin oily and remains on all day.

physicians-formula-baked-pyramid_LRG.jpg

I swear by Chanel cosmetics too. Their eyeshadows are fantastic and last forever.

Bec & Bridge

Designers of The Week:

Picture 19

Above is a photo of Becky Cooper and Bridget Yorston who are the two designers behind the Australian label Bec & Bridge. Their label launched in 2003 and it has since been worn by celebrities such as Supermodel Miranda Kerr among others. Their designs are truly impressive especially for a brand that is relatively young.

Below are my favorite Winter pieces from the brand.  I absolutely adore the chains, feathers, metallics, patent leather and gold details not to mention the simplicity illustrated in most of the designs. These looks seem like they would look good on anybody and the designs don’t seem like they would dominate the person wearing them. It doesn’t seem as though the designs would enter a room before the person wearing them did. I really like that.

Take a look:Picture 18cuffw09c-s001w09c-d001w08a-lg001

brown-court-b.jpg

It is my opinion that Chris Brown should be in jail as I type this. Instead, the poor excuse for a man/superstar received 5 years of probation and 180 days of community labor as a sentence. He also has to take anger management courses. Oh gee, what a punishment. If Mr. Brown wasn’t a celebrity, he would be in jail right now. However, on the bright side he did take responsibility for his actions unlike in the past. Despite this, I am still boycotting his music. Some say that it’s a little rough to boycott his music but for some reason, I took what he did to Rihanna very personally. Maybe it is because she is not that much older than me but I have always felt like he hit a person I knew. Odd, I know but Rihanna could easily have been one of my friends or myself for that matter and that is one of the reasons that I therefore refuse to support anything he does as an artist. Only a coward speaks with his fists and that’s how I will forever feel about Chris Brown and other people like him.

“It’s borderline pornographic”

Caution: Graphic Content featured below

ckCalvin Klein

That is what Lisa Marchese (whom is a marketing specialist) said when interviewed by the Daily News in reference to the Calvin Klein ad above. I say to her, “YOU ARE BORDERLINE RIDICULOUS. YOU MUST BE KIDDING ME?!”

I don’t know what is borderline pornographic about the ad above. They’re all semi-clothed while engaging in what seems like lustful behavior. So? If no one has noticed, sex and even the suggestion of it is what sells! Maybe people are freaking out because the ad can be spotted on Lafayette and Houston in New York City, right there on the street. It’s not like an advertisement in a magazine where you’re not forced to look at it but I still feel that it’s just ridiculous. I’m sure no person in the world is going to get the idea or want to engage in an orgy because they saw suggestive behavior on a Calvin Klein billboard? Maybe it’s because I grew up in Europe and can’t get used to the American Conservative (no offense to conservatives) mindset because I grew up seeing nude women on the front page of the Sunday newspaper but it’s just… SO annoying!? I get irritated about things like this for one reason and one reason only: I do not recall anybody making a stink about American Apparel’s sheer dress and buttless tights advertisements that were all the fuss last month.

Not to mention the Fall 2009 Calvin Klein ads featuring Eva Mendes – Are they borderline pornographic too? Not in my opinion.

calvin_ad_klein1.jpgcalvin_ad_klein2.jpg

I say we just stop worrying about stupid things like what Calvin Klein advertisements look like, what drugs Lindsay Lohan is taking and whether or not Kate from the overhyped “reality” show Jon & Kate plus 8 is raising her kids correctly. Our economy stinks (Calvin Klein is actually stimulating it by paying out the gazoo for that billboard – Do you know how much something like that costs!??!?!), Iranians are currently protesting and being killed, refugees are dying… I mean, come on people! All of this may sound a little hypocritical considering I write about things like apparel, accesories, etc. on my blog but I don’t land on the front page of a magazine and I don’t become the lead story on the news. When I sit down to watch the news, Calvin Klein ads should not be the lead story like it was today. That is just so wasteful.

What do you all think? Is this borderline pornographic advertising?

Jimmy Choo coming to H&M

H&M is collaborating with an accessories brand for the first time. They’re teaming up with Jimmy Choo for holiday retailing and according to The Guardian , the collection will include footwear, accessories and clothing.  I don’t even want to know how fast that collection is going to sell out but it’s fantastic news, anyways!

Speaking of shoes…

I found some old things in the attic today. My vintage/very beat up Fendi bag and tan leather wedges! They’re so comfortable!

IMG_3146shoes

I also found an old H&M vest which was bought when I lived in Europe about 7 years ago. It’s a little boxy but I am sure I’ll use it in my wardrobe this Fall.

IMG_3153

May I also suggest that…

You take a listen to The Fray’s cover of Kanye West’s song “Heartless.” This song has always been extremely personal to me and The Fray just increased my love for the song. Just like Mandy Moore’s cover of Rihanna’s “Umbrella”, The Fray’s version allows for one to realize exactly what is being said and sung of within the lyrics. Beautiful. Take a look/listen:

Plastic Dreams

Agyness Deyn - Ashanti.jpg

Supermodel Agyness Deyn in the Ashanti boot which retails for $120.00

Until today, I didn’t think that it was at all possible to create shoes like high heels simply out of soft plastic. However, I stumbled upon Melissa shoes and they seem to be designed from just that! The shoes are created by transforming plastic spheres in to … Well, shoes. The plastic is manufactured in Brazil and according to stylefrizz, Melissa sells 2.3 million pairs of shoes a year. Vivienne Westwood is the lastest designer whom has signed models for Melissa and little did I know that I actually featured one of those models on youarewhoyouwear a few days ago. Below are my favorite Melissa designs. They are very interesting and diverse and I can’t believe I didn’t know of the designs until today. Take a look:

IMG_3097

I got these booties in October of 2008. They were incredibly budget friendly and since then, they’ve been through blizzards with me, puddles of mud, dirt, cornfields – you name it. They still look brand new, they feel brand new and they’re a delight to walk in. I hope they remain that way :) I wore them out to the movies along with my Marc Jacobs bag but I forgot to include it in the picture. I went out with my sister to see The Hangover which was by far the most entertaining movie I have seen in years – incredibly hilarious not to mention that Bradley Cooper is so gorgeous! Who knew?

& speaking of Marc Jacobs…

One has to adore his Fall/Winter 2009 shoe collection. It’s a fun collection (am I the only one who feels that the base of the shoes featured below look somewhat similar to a clog?  Maybe Mr. Jacobs found inspiration from the clog and built the shoes from there?) and it just screams Marc Jacobs. David Beckham for Armani

Like his wife, Victoria Beckham, Mr. Beckham is yet again posing for Armani & the pictures speak for themselves. Despite his odd hairstyle & weird prop/rope I believe he’s gorgeous and I love how they didn’t photoshop out his body hair. His tattoos are incredible too. Actually, who am I kidding? Fracture

Last night, I watched the movie Fracture” for the second time. Mr. Gosling was the sole reason I even sat down to watch it. The brilliant actor that is Anthony Hopkins also stars in this absolutely stunning film but I absolutely refuse to spoil it for any of you, so just take my word and go rent it, buy it or you can also view the trailer here.

While I was watching the movie, I began thinking… What is it that makes Ryan Gosling so appealing? To all of you thinking “The Notebook”, I feel that you are very wrong. I was watching Mr. Gosling on TV during his Breaker Highand Young Hercules days and even then there was something about him. I don’t know what it is but he is talented and seems incredibly charming.

Below are a few pictures of Ryan Gosling. What do you all think? Why is he so appealing?

Emma Watson for Burberry

I was surprised to learn that Emma Watson is the face of the Burberry Fall/Winter collection. However, after her editorial in Crash Magazine (which was photographed by Karl Lagerfeld) I predict she will be appearing in other campaigns to come. Here are the photos of Emma Watson’s Burberry Campaign:Behold: Emma Watson’s Burberry Campaign

The campaign will break in to the August issues of magazines including but not limited to: Vanity Fair, Vogue, British Vogue and Tatler, Mario Testino took the photos in England. Last month, Burberry announced that it will show its Burberry Prorsum collection for the Spring/Summer of 2010 as part of London Fashion Week in September breaking the 8 year old tradition of showing their collection at Milan Fashion Week.
